We’re delighted to welcome Margielyn Lopez Gonzaga (better known as Margie) to Hampton Care Home as our clinical manager. Margie is an experienced care home nurse, deputy manager and registered manager – who just happens to be returning to Hampton for the third time!
Margie grew up on the island of Panay, an hour’s flight from the Philippine capital, Manila. She is the daughter of a retired teacher turned division supervisor who “travelled a lot overseeing schools”, and a former chief of police. She has a sister (a nurse in Canada) and two brothers – a fashion designer and company manager – who also own a traditional Filipino restaurant together.
The four siblings were extremely sporty and accomplished. Margie’s mother coached her in gymnastics – the teenage Margie competed in several regional competitions and danced in several shows, directed and choreographed by her mother. “I also like singing, which I get from my father,” she says.
After qualifying in general nursing, Margie decided to seek her fortune abroad. With four cousins here in the UK, she took the plunge and came over in 2002. She found work at a military nursing home in Richmond Hill, where she spent 12 happy years – and also met husband Roson, a healthcare assistant.
Over the course of the next few years, Margie worked in senior roles at several care home groups, including Care UK, Barchester and Brighterkind. In between, she came to Hampton twice – as a unit, then deputy manager – before it was acquired by Canford Healthcare. Her final role before returning to Hampton (now part of Canford Healthcare) recently as clinical manager was the registered manager of Kingston Rehabilitation Centre for spinal injuries.
Margie is delighted to be back. Her role involves looking after the clinical side of the business, including the supervision of the nurses and carers. She completed her NVQ Level 5 in Leadership and Management in 2019 and loves the teaching and mentoring element of the clinical manager role.
“Hampton is a cheerful place where the staff know each other and work well together. That is so important, as good teamwork and a happy working environment both help us to provide the first-rate care that residents deserve,” she says.
Away from work Margie loves baking – her cupcakes and specialty bread are popular with staff – and is a keen cyclist. She’s also a hands-on mum to Michaella, a postgraduate architecture student who works for a London firm of architects and is currently taking a master’s degree in Architecture, 15-year-old Kimberly and Sophia, 12. Cooking is clearly a great passion within the family as all the children love baking and Roson is “very hands on, and a great cook”.
